One of the biggest challenges of being an entrepreneur and being responsible for creating your own paycheck is you tend to always be in work mode. Whether you’re a virtual assistant or a network or affiliate marketer, because you’re home it’s tough not to check emails even when it’s not work hours. When I first started working from home as a virtual assistant I was constantly checking emails and feeling like I should answer them if there was something in the inbox. I had one client that called me during all hours and on weekends. I realized I needed to put an end to that. You do have to have boundaries, or your home life will suffer – and when you’re working from home you want the opposite result, right? You want more and better interaction with your loved ones that live with you. You don’t want your nose in the computer (or on your phone) day and night. So here’s some tips:
Tips for Virtual Workers
Set business hours. What hours do your clients expect you to be online and working? Those are the hours you are on and the rest of the time, you are off. Period.
Have a separate computer for working. During off hours you may want to jump on social media or make some purchases online. Do that on a separate computer or tablet. Your work computer needs to be off or in another room during non-working hours.
Set up a separate phone line. This doesn’t have to be expensive. Today no one really faxes, so it’s not like you need an actual separate phone line in your home. I use Skype for business. When I’m not working, Skype is shut off, along with my work computer. It’s only $18 for 3 months of phone service with
Skype and you get a separate number. Vonage is another good way to go. It’s very inexpensive and you can literally call Japan for free! You must have internet service to use this and an actual telephone to plug into their system. Make sure the phone has a ringer that you can turn OFF during non-business hours!
Remember, when you’re done working for the day – you’re done.
Network and Affiliate Marketing
This is a bit trickier, especially with network marketing. Really with network marketing, you pretty much need to always “be on”. You may be in the grocery store and overhear someone talking or they may make small talk with you in the checkout line, and perhaps they are talking about a problem that you can help them solve with your network marketing business. That’s what network marketers do – they help people. Maybe you’re at the gym, at a family gathering, a wedding…even a funeral….and something comes up and guess what – you’re in business mode! Maybe you’re just spending an evening at home with the family, but your business partners are meeting with prospects or customers and they need your help – you’re on! So this is, I guess, a downfall of network marketing. On the other hand, if you get your family involved in your business and if your spouse does it with you, your mom, your brothers, your adult children….then hey, no problem! Sorry, I have no tips for you here…..we live, breath and LOVE network marketing in this house and family!
Affiliate marketing is just plain addicting and you are always wanting to get more content out there. You suddenly have a new blog idea or think of a new way to get the attention of your audience and you want to try it out! BUT, you should really stick to your set hours. In this case, keep a pen and paper near by – or make notes on your note pad on your phone with ideas and address them the next day during work hours.
So, it’s tough to turn off that work flow when you work at home and if it is, that just means you love what you do! But be sure to take some time just for you – and your family too!
