Always On!

One of the biggest challenges of being an entrepreneur and being responsible for creating your own paycheck is you tend to always be in work mode.  Whether you’re a virtual assistant or a network or affiliate marketer, because you’re home it’s tough not to check emails even when it’s not work hours.  When I first started working from home as a virtual assistant I was constantly checking emails and feeling like I should answer them if there was something in the inbox.  I had one client that called me during all hours and on weekends.  I realized I needed to put an end to that.  You do have to have boundaries, or your home life will suffer – and when you’re working from home you want the opposite result, right?  You want more and better interaction with your loved ones that live with you.  You don’t want your nose in the computer (or on your phone) day and night.  So here’s some tips:

Tips for Virtual Workers

  • Set business hours.
What hours do your clients expect you to be online and working?  Those are the hours you are on and the rest of the time, you are off.  Period.

  • Have a separate computer for working.  During off hours you may want to jump on social media or make some purchases online.  Do that on a separate computer or tablet.  Your work computer needs to be off or in another room during non-working hours.

  • Set up a separate phone line.  This doesn’t have to be expensive.  Today no one really faxes, so it’s not like you need an actual separate phone line in your home.  I use Skype for business.  When I’m not working, Skype is shut off, along with my work computer.  It’s only $18 for 3 months of phone service with
    Skype
and you get a separate number.   Vonage is another good way to go.  It’s very inexpensive and you can literally call Japan for free!  You must have internet service to use this and an actual telephone to plug into their system.  Make sure the phone has a ringer that you can turn OFF during non-business hours!

Remember, when you’re done working for the day – you’re done.

Network and Affiliate Marketing

This is a bit trickier, especially with network marketing.  Really with network marketing, you pretty much need to always “be on”.  You may be in the grocery store and overhear someone talking or they may make small talk with you in the checkout line, and perhaps they are talking about a problem that you can help them solve with your network marketing business.  That’s what network marketers do – they help people.  Maybe you’re at the gym, at a family gathering, a wedding…even a funeral….and something comes up and guess what – you’re in business mode!  Maybe you’re just spending an evening at home with the family, but your business partners are meeting with prospects or customers and they need your help – you’re on!  So this is, I guess, a downfall of network marketing.  On the other hand, if you get your family involved in your business and if your spouse does it with you, your mom,  your brothers, your adult children….then hey, no problem!  Sorry, I have no tips for you here…..we live, breath and LOVE network marketing in this house and family!

Affiliate marketing is just plain addicting and you are always wanting to get more content out there.  You suddenly have a new blog idea or think of a new way to get the attention of your audience and you want to try it out!  BUT, you should really stick to your set hours.  In this case, keep a pen and paper near by – or make notes on your note pad on your phone with ideas and address them the next day during work hours.

So, it’s tough to turn off that work flow when you work at home and if it is, that just means you love what you do!  But be sure to take some time just for you – and your family too!

Network Marketing – The New Career

I often quote “The Network Marketing Pro“, Eric Worre when he ScreenHunter_296 Oct. 27 13.42says “We have a better way.”  Five simple little words, but there’s a lot of truth behind them and here’s 3 reasons why that’s true:

  • Network marketing requires no college education
  • Network marketing requires no prior experience
  • You can make more money with a network marketing career than you can as the two things every mother used to want their kid to be – a doctor or a lawyer.
There’s a host of other reason as well, including that it gives you the type of freedom that you can’t get from any job or career in most cases.  You have the freedom to work with who you want to work with for one.  In network marketing we choose our business partners.  There are people that I would never ask to partner with me in my business, even though they are very successful and may be great at network marketing, because I know it just would not work.
In Eric’s book “Go Pro” he provides a list called “The Perfect Career List”, which include items they want and don’t want from their career.

What they don’t want:

  • No boss

  • No commute

  • No alarm clock

  • No discrimination

  • No educational requirements

What they do want:

  • Something positive
  • Unlimited income
  • Residual income
  • Time freedom
  • Lots of perks
  • Low start-up cost
  • Tax benefits
This is not an inclusive list – but you get the picture.   Most network marketing companies cost less than $500 to get started with.  Compare that to tens of thousands of dollars to go to college – for any career; and hundreds of thousands of dollars if not millions to start a business such as a Starbucks or McDonalds.
vectorartrevolution4_bigThere are no education requirements.  We always say “from Yale to jail, anyone can do network marketing”.
There is no discrimination.  Any religion, race, gender and anything in between.  It doesn’t matter.

A career today is difficult to start because it does take capital – whether it’s start up fees for a new business venture, or money to go to college, so many end up at dead-end jobs they hate – or in continuous debt to get the career of their dreams going.

Perhaps you were meant to be a doctor or a small business owner in a brick and mortar setting and not a network marketer.  Network marketing may instead be that seed money you need for your dream business or your student loan payment.  However if you’re looking for a career that can help you accomplish those other dreams and where you get to help lots of others do the same thing – it may just be the career you’ve always been looking for!

5 Reasons You Should Not Be Self-Employed

Perhaps you’ve been thinking lately that self-employment looks pretty good.  The economy wanes constantly and who ever really knows if their job is secure.  But on the other hand…having a job is a bit of a safety net.  After all, if you get let go from your job for lack of work, you have the unemployment safety net.  If you get hurt outside of work, you have the disability safety net and if you get hurt on the job, you have the Worker’s Compensation safety net.   None of these 3 items exist in the world of self-employment.  You are on your own.  So you need to think about the decision to become self-employed carefully and weigh out the pros and cons.

Why You Should NOT Become Self-Employed

  1. You’re Afraid of Work: One of the top reason’s you should not become self-employed is if you are afraid of work.  Being self-employed in any business means that you will work harder than you ever have before.  It means nights and weekends and early mornings sometimes.   It means everything rests on your shoulders.  Eventually in the right business, done correctly, it will give you the freedom you’re looking for – but not when you get started.
  2. You’re a Quitter:  If you give up on things easily (this used to be me – which is why previous attempts at self-employment failed) you should not become self-employed UNLESS you are able to learn and grow from that experience and you have the financial backing to take that chance.  What I mean is, unless you have a good deal of money in the bank, or a spouse or other family member that can carry you financially until you make it (or break it).  If you are not sure you are going to be able to keep going no matter what and that you are not going to quit when the going gets rough…either don’t start, or have some solid finances set up.
  3. You Have Trouble With Commitment: If you have trouble committing to anything – being self-employed may not be for you.  With anything you do, whether it be starting a home business or working an actual job from your home, there will be ups and downs and you have to be ready to roll with the punches….because there will be punches!
  4. You Don’t have Vision: Entrepreneurs have vision of bigger and better things down the road.  You may not have an overflowing bank account TODAY, or time freedom TODAY, but if you have vision, those things will be in your future.  You have to see them and KNOW that they can happen IF you don’t give up, and IF you see the bigger picture and do what it takes to get there!
  5. You Don’t Have Endurance:  This goes along with not quitting and with really being committed….but also you need to know that sometimes things don’t happen in a few months or a couple years.  Sometimes it takes 5 years or even a bit more to get a home business or other entrepreneurial venture where you want it to be.  You have to be ready to be the turtle because being the rabbit can often lead to mistakes and shortcuts and things that will not give you the lasting results you want.  After all, if you are going to work that hard to achieve your dreams you don’t want it to be all over once you reach your goal.  You want it to have lifetime effects, if not generational effects.

And so to balance this out, let’s take a look at 5 reason’s you SHOULD become self-employed:

  1. You are Your Own Best Friend: You want to depend on yourself for your income supply and not a job.  While there’s security in a job to some degree, you never really know how long it will be there.  Create something lasting and YOU be in control.
  2. You Are So Over the Time Clock: Whether it’s that you don’t want to do mornings anymore or that you don’t want to have to stay at work when all your work is really done….but you’re a slave to the clock; being self-employed gives you choices.  If you don’t do the work, you won’t get paid, BUT you can choose the days and times that you want to work and when you’re done, you’re done…no more waiting for the hand’s to hit the 5 and 12 so you can get on with your life!
  3. You Want to Leave a Legacy: Sometimes being self-employed is just about not having to answer to a boss and making some kind of income.  But for most people that choose to do so, it’s much more.  It can become a part of who you are and therefore it can become a legacy you leave behind – be it large or small.
  4. You Want More: Whether it’s more money, better health care, more time, more freedom or a host of other things – a job can and does hold people back.  If you want to earn more money at a job, you can only ask for a raise, or try and get promoted, if you have the education and skills to do so.  In self-employment you are generally also working on self-development and therefore you continue to reach for bigger and better and continue to improve your life and your circumstances – along with your bank account.
  5. It’s All About Choices: Whether it’s about what time you start work, leave work, how much you make or what you do each day, self-employment can provide you with so many choices!

The last reason why you should become self-employed has always been my number one reason.  There was a couple of times that things were not going so well in the world of self-employment and I caved and applied for some jobs outside the house and even took one…it didn’t last.  I don’t like strict schedules, I don’t like having to sit and do nothing at the end of a day when all the work is caught up and we are just waiting for 5pm to roll around….I don’t like not having choices about how much I make or what I am going to do to earn that money.

Today I wake up whenever I wake up.  I take actions that I know will result in money and I enjoy those actions.  I am learning every day and becoming better in a host of ways that enrich not only my bank account, but my life.  It’s been an amazing ride these past 9 years and I could never, never go back to depending on a job.

Is self-employment for you?  Only you can make that decision.

Network Marketing is Not…

It’s not a Pyramid Scheme

Pyramid-Scheme1Network marketing still has a bad reputation in the eyes of some folks because of the days of the “pyramid scheme”.  Network marketing is not a pyramid scheme.   In fact, network marketing is often disguised as your favorite direct sales company.  Did you know that Mary Kay is a network marketing company, as well as a direct sales company?  So is Avon, Pampered Chef, 31 and just about any other direct sales company you can think of.  All that this means is that to make money you sell products, but to make LOTS of money and a “residual income” you need to have distributors under you, who also sell products.

It’s Not an “Only the Top Dog Gets the Money” Business

Network marketing is also not a “only the top people make money”top dog type of business model.  In the network marketing company I’m in personally I have people that have joined my business, but that are making more than I am and are in a rank above me.  That’s a good thing!  They are still helping me make a residual income and they can do it at a pace that works for them.  I’m not holding them back and they are able to take it as high as they want to.  I’m extremely happy for them!

It’s Not a “Get Rich Quick” or Lazy Man’s Business

getrichNetwork marketing is definitely NOT a “get rich quick” business model, nor is it a “sit back and do nothing and get paid” business.  Network marketing is indeed work, just as owning any business would be.   You can make a good income over time (not over night)

Do Your Homework

Before joining any network marketing company, do your homework.  Where do they stand with the business community.  Check them out in publications like Inc. Magazine, Success From Home Magazine, The Direct Sales Association and the Better Business Bureau.  Balance out your findings.  There will be bad reviews about every company out there, but you have to sort through the good and the bad and determine if they are a company that you want to work with.

Ask the Pros

The Network Marketing Pro, Eric Worre, recently wrote a book, “Go Pro” where Eric talks about the direction of the economy and the workplace today.  We see machines and computers continue to take our jobs – even retail and service jobs.  Other jobs have gone overseas for good.  Most jobs that are left require a college education…which of course requires a lot of money.  So how will those of us survive that don’t have great skills or an education as the jobs we do know how to do disappear?  Network marketing is an answer for some and it’s an ever growing trend.

From Yale to Jail – anyone can do network marketing.  I’ve told you what network marketing is not, now let me tell you what it is – or could be for you.  It can be a way to make a full-time income with part-time effort.  It can be a way for you to accomplish  your dreams and help your family accomplish theirs.  Go for your dreams!

Virtual Assistant Work – How to Get Started

I’m going to start with virtual assistant work because this is what I know best and have done for 8 years now.  You will be able to apply the information on how to get started as a virtual assistant to getting started in other areas of online work as well such as graphic artist, website designer, accountant and many other areas.  Again, this is about working a “job” from home and not a home business, although you should also understand that most times these jobs will pay you not as an employee, but rather as an independent contractor.  There are pros and cons to both.  Let’s examine that first:

procon

Pros

  • Tax Benefits – you can claim a portion of  your mortgage or rent, utility bills, phone bills and more.
  • Don’t like the job? You can leave at any time without notice.  It’s still good to give notice when you can but a week or a few days is plenty.  You won’t be penalized for it.
  • You TELL your client when you are taking time off, you don’t have to ask for it.  Again, it’s nice to give notice and use some common courtesy, because they can also let you go at any time.

Cons

  • There’s no unemployment insurance should you suddenly be let go for any reason
  • There’s no disability insurance should you become injured or sick
  • There’s no paid time off; sick, vacation or otherwise
So how do you start?  First you have to find the work.  There sites ScreenHunter_181 Oct. 14 19.41like Elance.com and Guru.com where you can bid on work.  Then it works somewhat like Ebay; if you are awarded the work you need to do a good job and do it in the ScreenHunter_180 Oct. 14 19.41time frame you promised so that you will get a good rating.  Likewise you will be rating the client.  As you build your reputation you can get better jobs and better paying jobs!  So you want to always do a great job and turn it around in the time you said you would.  Both the above sites mentioned have free membership options, as well as paid options that offer you more bids and allow you to keep more of your pay (Elance for instance gets more than 8% of what you bid, so if you bid $20 an hour, you will actually get $18.50)  To start you should of course bid as low as you can and do the best job that you can and build your reputation on the sites.
You can also find other independent contractor work as well as employee work from home at FlexJobs.com as well as on Craigslist.  These jobs are different in that you won’t have to bid on them.  You will instead apply for them just as you would a brick and mortar job.  You will be interviewed and screened and if you are the best candidate you will get the job.  If you’re not, you won’t.  Just like the “real world”.
Just like getting a brick and mortar job, you will need to have a good resume prepared and ready to upload (send a pdf, not a Word document), and just like applying for a brick and mortar job you will also write a well written cover letter.  Sometimes you’ll have phone interviews, sometimes you’ll have an interview via Skype (yes, you’ll be on video so dress accordingly) and sometimes clients will just hire you without even an email.  It just depends on the type of job or work you will be performing as well as other factors.
In future posts I’ll be going into more detail on how to start using Elance and Guru, including some video for you.

Working From Home – What Would You Like to Do?

w3There is a large number of ways to earn money from home.  You can get an actual job from home – either as an employee or as a contractor.  You can also start your own business which can be anything from making and selling your own products, drop shipping, network marketing, affiliate marketing or a host of other home businesses.  Some ambitious folks like myself like to try several things to see what they enjoy doing and also what is most lucrative.

The best thing you can do is start at the beginning.  Determine first, do you want a job or do you want a business.  Next decide what time frame of each day or week you can devote to that.  Put it in your schedule and start working on it.   It won’t be easy to balance everything, but if this is what you really want, it will be worth it.

When I started working from  home, I opted first for a job.  I didn’t quit my day job but instead worked nights and weekends doing telemarketing (I know, yuck!).  I promoted with the company and started making even more money (this was a good thing!).  In the meantime I continued to look for other jobs that I preferred to do and that I could possibly do full time from home.  After a few months I found a job calling businesses and surveying them on how they liked the service that was provided to them from various companies that came and fixed their equipment.  I got paid $8 an hour.  I was making $12 an hour in the city.  This job from home allowed me to stop traveling and paying for gasoline, I didn’t need a fancy wardrobe and I was able to watch my granddaughter who was an infant (only once did she coo in the background and one of the businesses I called said “did I hear a baby?”).  I quit my full time job outside the home and was on my way to being self-employed and I haven’t looked back since.  It’s been almost 10 years!

It was much later in my self-employment adventure that I got started with network marketing and eventually affiliate marketing too.  These were concepts I hadn’t understood or even known about before and they have me a whole new spark and hope to have something even more from life, and I’ll explain that in a different post.  Both network and affiliate marketing can be done in your spare time and can be as simple as sharing a social media post or chatting with a co-worker over lunch to show them what you’re doing.  It’s pretty simple stuff with a very lucrative outcome!

Starting a home business such as selling products out of your home via eBay or Amazon takes a bit more planning and possibly capital as well, but can be started in your spare time on the side.

Whatever you decide, just get started.  The only way to learn is from your mistakes.  Those who are wealthy today only got that way by making mistake after mistake, but they didn’t let the mistakes stop them.  They learned from those errors and “got back on the horse” and kept going and they made it work!  You need to have that fire in your belly and you need to want it bad enough.  It’s kind of like in the movie the Matrix – will you take the red pill or the blue pill.  The red pill will show you a whole new world that is scary but exciting too.  Take the blue pill and you can just go on and pretend the other world doesn’t exist and go on about life as you have been.  Which will you take?

How to Get What you Want for Less

ScreenHunter_126 Sep. 28 20.52Everyone likes a deal, and there are plenty of them out there, but we have to dig a little.  There are lots of good finds to save on everything from groceries to utilities and from pet supplies to flowers!  This time of year is one of those times that people are looking for the best and biggest deals.  With winter & Christmas coming, higher bills and extra expenses are upon us and savings is more crucial than ever!

So where to start?  When thinking about shopping for anything from the basics to starting your Christmas shopping early, Amazon is an absolute go-to! Why? They have everything for cheaper!  Did you know that there are entrepreneurs who make a living by posting products on Ebay and then when someone buys that item the entrepreneur buys it on Amazon and ships it to the buyer?  Amazon truly has everything from groceries to light fixtures, Halloween costumes, electronics and even a bridal and baby registry for brides and mom’s to be!ScreenHunter_127 Sep. 28 20.54

You may already know about all the great deals on Amazon, but you may not know that as many as 30 of the 50 U.S. states are energy deregulated.  Why should you care?  Because that means if your state is one of them you now have a choice of who your energy provider is AND it provides competition in your state, which lowers prices.  Check your local Public Service Commission to see who the providers are in your area and you may also be able to see what the current prices are of each ESCO (Energy Service Company).

There are also a lot of great shopping apps out there that help you find what you are looking for online, all in one place instead of searching website after website after website.  Two of the newest apps are Alibaba and Leafit.  Alibaba works much like the Biz Rate website giving you a list of the product you are looking for so you can shop several different sites at once and purchase right from the app or online from your computer. Leafit will offer something similar but with a social media twist. The idea behind Leafit is to share pics just as those on Pinterest and Facebook do, but the pics have e-commerce attached to them.  In other words, a product comes along with the picture.  You could purchase that product from that picture, or you could go to the search option and search for something else, and again get a list of the places that carry the product, along with the price at each vendor.  Retailers at both Alibaba and Leafit include popular sites like Amazon, Walmart, Target, Macy’s and Lowes.

There are many ways to save today and many tools to help you get there.  Always be looking for a deal so you can spend that money on something more fun, like a trip to Disney or the beach, a new outfit, or maybe on the rising energy bills that will be coming this winter.  Either way, savings is a good thing!  To your savings!

Is Your Home Business Recession Proof?

Originally posted on Work From Home Wonder:

There are lots of great home businesses out there.  People usually choose something they are passionate about and that they can do part-time while working their regular job.  Many who have home businesses are women that are doing it as a part-time supplemental income.  If they make some money great, if they don’t that’s okay too.

But now let’s talk about getting serious with a home business.  Let’s talk about those who want or NEED to earn a REAL income with that business. What are some considerations when deciding what type of business to start?  One might first start with ‘who will my customer be?’ Is the product or service a niche market or can most anyone be a customer?  Is there a large demand for the service or product you will be providing?  Is it something people NEED?  Or can they live without it?   Will your business be more seasonal…
