Network Marketing: A Scheme or a Way to Make a True Living Wage?

Pyramid-Scheme1

I know some people are afraid of network marketing because of the very old term “pyramid scheme”.  Understand this: pyramid schemes are in fact illegal…look it up with your state Attorney General’s office.  See what they say about “network marketing” as opposed to “pyramid schemes”.  The law embraces network marketing!  When companies like mine get awards from J.D. Powers, Inc 500, the Direct Sales Association, etc., etc., etc…..they are real, they are powerful and they CAN change your life – if you CHOOSE to change it!

If you don’t choose to do network marketing that’s okay…BUT be sure and read the very inexpensive and very quick read “Go Pro” byJim-Rohn Eric Worre and understand where “jobs” are going today.  Hey, we’ll always need nurses and doctors and police and firefighters, etc. But just like factory work has dwindled down to almost nothing and factories continue to leave this country – so it will be with retail, restaurants, etc.  Unless you have a college education and can get a management position you cannot and will not be able to make a living wage.  And here’s the coolest thing about network marketing – we have a saying, “from Yale to jail”.  It doesn’t matter where you come from, what your education is, what your gender, or ethnicity is, etc., etc….you can do network marketing and make a real living at it, and certainly a “living wage”.

income-producing-activitiesSo I encourage people to stop waiting for a raise, stop waiting for the government to raise the minimum wage, and stop waiting for that promotion.  See here’s the big difference between your job and a network marketing business.  With your job you can work your butt off and know you deserve a raise and a promotion, but you have to wait till someone else deems you worth of that….if they ever do.  And if they don’t, your choices are to keep waiting or start over again somewhere else, that will hopefully appreciate you.  With network marketing YOU determine when you will get a raise and a promotion.  The harder you work, the more money you make and the higher you go in rank – which in turn makes you more money.  It is YOUR business, therefore YOU determine how fast you grow.  Yes, you have to invest a little money and some time – BUT the return on that investment will be much greater than the 40 hours a week you are putting in now at your job.

If you really think network marketing companies are “pyramid schemes” then you need to do some research so you have a better understanding of the market.  While there have been such schemes in the past and I’m sure there are  a few today, remember they are generally found out and shut down within months of opening (my company has been in business over 8 years). Schemes also do not have a real product or service.  Some direct sales companies you are familiar with also use a network marketing compensation plan.  For instance, Mary Kay; you can sell Mary Kay products and make a little money – or you can sell Mary Kay products and also enlist several others to sell Mary Kay products “under” you so that you also make money from their sales….and then they also put sales associates “under them” and you make money from them too.  That’s how it works.  No one can earn a pink Mary Kay Cadillac unless they build a team under them.  That’s where the real money is.  The same is true for many of your favorite home party, direct sales brands: Pampered Chef, Party Lite, Tupperware, Avon, 31 and more.DonaldTrump-NetworkMarketing

Is network marketing for you?  Maybe not, but if you are struggling to make a living wage, if college is not for you or you just can’t afford it, if you are looking for a way to stay home with the kids or just have more time to do things you enjoy – then you may want to consider network marketing.

Starting today, you’ll no longer need an Office 365 subscription to edit documents or store them in the cloud. The move comes just days after Microsoft announced a strategic partnership with Dropbox to integrate the cloud storage service into Office across desktop, mobile, and the web. You can now download Office for iPad and store all your documents on Dropbox without paying Microsoft anything at all. Microsoft is also releasing a brand new iPhone app today, alongside a preview of Office for Android tablets, all with Dropbox integration.

Work From Home Boundaries

Work-Life-Sign

Whether you have an actual job from home or you’re an entrepreneur working your business from home – you need to have boundaries; with your family, with your friends, your neighbors and even those random folks who may drop by from time to time like the FedEx delivery person, a salesperson or a politician.  It happens.

So what can you do?

  • Let your family and those you live with know your hours of operation and let them know you’re off limits during those times.

  • Have a private and quiet space away from outside noises and interruptions.  If you’re home doesn’t have an extra room that you can make into an office, just find a spot where your family understands it’s off limits until your done working for the day.

  • You may live alone or be home alone during the day time hours when you’re working.  There can still be interruptions.  Put a sign on any outside doors someone might come to letting them know “Working from home.  Please don’t knock.  Leave a note. (or text me at xxx-xxx-xxxx)”.  You may need to put a sign outside your office door or work area that just says “SSSHHHHHH”.  Hint, hint!

I had a challenging boundary day today myself.  Check it out:

There’s No Place Like Home

youve-always-had-the-power

In the Wizard of Oz Dorothy had an amazing adventure.  She met new people, learned a lot and had some excitement to say the least!  But at the end she just wanted to go home.  If you’re still working outside the home, you may have had similar experiences.  You may like most everyone you work with; you’ve likely learned quite a bit from your job and there’s generally always some excitement going on whether it’s office drama, warehouse pranks or interesting retail customers.  At the end of the day, most of us just can’t wait to get home.

So how can you get home – for good?  Learning to work from home is a process.  It seldom happens overnight and most times it doesn’t start off like we picture.  We all want to sleep in, work in our PJ’s, get dressed around 10 am and be able to run out the door to pick up a sick kid at school at the drop of a hat.  It doesn’t start out that way.  Like with any career path, you have to start at the bottom.  I started off 9 years ago doing telemarketing lead generation (I know – YUK!) and then progressed from there to phone surveys and then inbound telephone sales.  Honestly, I wasn’t happy with any of them.  They tied me to a phone all day and I had to work certain hours.  I still had to get up at a certain time each day to report to “work” and couldn’t stop work till it was “time”.  But it was a start.   Eventually I moved on to data entry, transcription and virtual assistant work.  Some of these positions still had me getting up at 6:30 am and tied to my computer – but I was no longer tied to the phone and I was able to watch my grandchildren while I worked, which was one of my main goals. Today I live the picture – I sleep till I’m done, get dressed around 10, can leave the house whenever I need to and I get paid much better to do so.  So, how can you do that too?

  • Realize that you do have to start at the bottom.  You may not have to do telemarketing, but you will likely have to do something that requires speaking on the phone, getting up early and not getting paid what you’re worth.
  • Learn more skills!   Browse some of the home job sites like Elance and Guru and see what clients are looking for – and then go out and learn it!  If you can’t find free classes on it, go to the website of the program and sign up for a free trial account and then spend as much time as you can learning how to use it!
  • Be on Social Media!  Social media is where it’s at today with ANY business!  At least be on the mainstream sites – Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and LinkedIn.  Learn how to maneuver in them from creating a fan page to joining groups.  You can learn how to do anything on YouTube!
  • Don’t be afraid!  Even when a client is looking for skills you don’t have, if you can do at least some of what they are asking for, apply for or bid on the job! Tell them you are a fast learner and love to learn new things – then bid it low or offer to work for less than they are paying.  You will get great experience and learn skills that can set you up for much better pay in the future. List those skills on your profile immediately and you will start getting offers!  This is where you start gaining leverage and can name your price.  The more skills you acquire, the more sought after you will be and the more you will make!  Make sense?

Some people like to get out of the house every day and they like to have the routine of going to a job and all that goes with it.  We purchased a very nice home that I enjoy decorating and making a warm comfortable place to live.  Why spend most of my time away from it?  For me, there’s no place like home.

Always On!

One of the biggest challenges of being an entrepreneur and being responsible for creating your own paycheck is you tend to always be in work mode.  Whether you’re a virtual assistant or a network or affiliate marketer, because you’re home it’s tough not to check emails even when it’s not work hours.  When I first started working from home as a virtual assistant I was constantly checking emails and feeling like I should answer them if there was something in the inbox.  I had one client that called me during all hours and on weekends.  I realized I needed to put an end to that.  You do have to have boundaries, or your home life will suffer – and when you’re working from home you want the opposite result, right?  You want more and better interaction with your loved ones that live with you.  You don’t want your nose in the computer (or on your phone) day and night.  So here’s some tips:

Tips for Virtual Workers

  • Set business hours.
What hours do your clients expect you to be online and working?  Those are the hours you are on and the rest of the time, you are off.  Period.

  • Have a separate computer for working.  During off hours you may want to jump on social media or make some purchases online.  Do that on a separate computer or tablet.  Your work computer needs to be off or in another room during non-working hours.

  • Set up a separate phone line.  This doesn’t have to be expensive.  Today no one really faxes, so it’s not like you need an actual separate phone line in your home.  I use Skype for business.  When I’m not working, Skype is shut off, along with my work computer.  It’s only $18 for 3 months of phone service with
    Skype
and you get a separate number.   Vonage is another good way to go.  It’s very inexpensive and you can literally call Japan for free!  You must have internet service to use this and an actual telephone to plug into their system.  Make sure the phone has a ringer that you can turn OFF during non-business hours!

Remember, when you’re done working for the day – you’re done.

Network and Affiliate Marketing

This is a bit trickier, especially with network marketing.  Really with network marketing, you pretty much need to always “be on”.  You may be in the grocery store and overhear someone talking or they may make small talk with you in the checkout line, and perhaps they are talking about a problem that you can help them solve with your network marketing business.  That’s what network marketers do – they help people.  Maybe you’re at the gym, at a family gathering, a wedding…even a funeral….and something comes up and guess what – you’re in business mode!  Maybe you’re just spending an evening at home with the family, but your business partners are meeting with prospects or customers and they need your help – you’re on!  So this is, I guess, a downfall of network marketing.  On the other hand, if you get your family involved in your business and if your spouse does it with you, your mom,  your brothers, your adult children….then hey, no problem!  Sorry, I have no tips for you here…..we live, breath and LOVE network marketing in this house and family!

Affiliate marketing is just plain addicting and you are always wanting to get more content out there.  You suddenly have a new blog idea or think of a new way to get the attention of your audience and you want to try it out!  BUT, you should really stick to your set hours.  In this case, keep a pen and paper near by – or make notes on your note pad on your phone with ideas and address them the next day during work hours.

So, it’s tough to turn off that work flow when you work at home and if it is, that just means you love what you do!  But be sure to take some time just for you – and your family too!

Network Marketing – The New Career

I often quote “The Network Marketing Pro“, Eric Worre when he ScreenHunter_296 Oct. 27 13.42says “We have a better way.”  Five simple little words, but there’s a lot of truth behind them and here’s 3 reasons why that’s true:

  • Network marketing requires no college education

  • Network marketing requires no prior experience

  • You can make more money with a network marketing career than you can as the two things every mother used to want their kid to be – a doctor or a lawyer.

There’s a host of other reason as well, including that it gives you the type of freedom that you can’t get from any job or career in most cases.  You have the freedom to work with who you want to work with for one.  In network marketing we choose our business partners.  There are people that I would never ask to partner with me in my business, even though they are very successful and may be great at network marketing, because I know it just would not work.

In Eric’s book “Go Pro” he provides a list called “The Perfect Career List”, which include items they want and don’t want from their career.

What they don’t want:

  • No boss

  • No commute

  • No alarm clock

  • No discrimination

  • No educational requirements

What they do want:

  • Something positive

  • Unlimited income

  • Residual income

  • Time freedom

  • Lots of perks

  • Low start-up cost

  • Tax benefits

This is not an inclusive list – but you get the picture.   Most network marketing companies cost less than $500 to get started with.  Compare that to tens of thousands of dollars to go to college – for any career; and hundreds of thousands of dollars if not millions to start a business such as a Starbucks or McDonalds.

vectorartrevolution4_bigThere are no education requirements.  We always say “from Yale to jail, anyone can do network marketing”.

There is no discrimination.  Any religion, race, gender and anything in between.  It doesn’t matter.

A career today is difficult to start because it does take capital – whether it’s start up fees for a new business venture, or money to go to college, so many end up at dead-end jobs they hate – or in continuous debt to get the career of their dreams going.

Perhaps you were meant to be a doctor or a small business owner in a brick and mortar setting and not a network marketer.  Network marketing may instead be that seed money you need for your dream business or your student loan payment.  However if you’re looking for a career that can help you accomplish those other dreams and where you get to help lots of others do the same thing – it may just be the career you’ve always been looking for!

5 Reasons You Should Not Be Self-Employed

Perhaps you’ve been thinking lately that self-employment looks pretty good.  The economy wanes constantly and who ever really knows if their job is secure.  But on the other hand…having a job is a bit of a safety net.  After all, if you get let go from your job for lack of work, you have the unemployment safety net.  If you get hurt outside of work, you have the disability safety net and if you get hurt on the job, you have the Worker’s Compensation safety net.   None of these 3 items exist in the world of self-employment.  You are on your own.  So you need to think about the decision to become self-employed carefully and weigh out the pros and cons.

Why You Should NOT Become Self-Employed

  1. You’re Afraid of Work: One of the top reason’s you should not become self-employed is if you are afraid of work.  Being self-employed in any business means that you will work harder than you ever have before.  It means nights and weekends and early mornings sometimes.   It means everything rests on your shoulders.  Eventually in the right business, done correctly, it will give you the freedom you’re looking for – but not when you get started.
  2. You’re a Quitter:  If you give up on things easily (this used to be me – which is why previous attempts at self-employment failed) you should not become self-employed UNLESS you are able to learn and grow from that experience and you have the financial backing to take that chance.  What I mean is, unless you have a good deal of money in the bank, or a spouse or other family member that can carry you financially until you make it (or break it).  If you are not sure you are going to be able to keep going no matter what and that you are not going to quit when the going gets rough…either don’t start, or have some solid finances set up.
  3. You Have Trouble With Commitment: If you have trouble committing to anything – being self-employed may not be for you.  With anything you do, whether it be starting a home business or working an actual job from your home, there will be ups and downs and you have to be ready to roll with the punches….because there will be punches!
  4. You Don’t have Vision: Entrepreneurs have vision of bigger and better things down the road.  You may not have an overflowing bank account TODAY, or time freedom TODAY, but if you have vision, those things will be in your future.  You have to see them and KNOW that they can happen IF you don’t give up, and IF you see the bigger picture and do what it takes to get there!
  5. You Don’t Have Endurance:  This goes along with not quitting and with really being committed….but also you need to know that sometimes things don’t happen in a few months or a couple years.  Sometimes it takes 5 years or even a bit more to get a home business or other entrepreneurial venture where you want it to be.  You have to be ready to be the turtle because being the rabbit can often lead to mistakes and shortcuts and things that will not give you the lasting results you want.  After all, if you are going to work that hard to achieve your dreams you don’t want it to be all over once you reach your goal.  You want it to have lifetime effects, if not generational effects.

And so to balance this out, let’s take a look at 5 reason’s you SHOULD become self-employed:

  1. You are Your Own Best Friend: You want to depend on yourself for your income supply and not a job.  While there’s security in a job to some degree, you never really know how long it will be there.  Create something lasting and YOU be in control.
  2. You Are So Over the Time Clock: Whether it’s that you don’t want to do mornings anymore or that you don’t want to have to stay at work when all your work is really done….but you’re a slave to the clock; being self-employed gives you choices.  If you don’t do the work, you won’t get paid, BUT you can choose the days and times that you want to work and when you’re done, you’re done…no more waiting for the hand’s to hit the 5 and 12 so you can get on with your life!
  3. You Want to Leave a Legacy: Sometimes being self-employed is just about not having to answer to a boss and making some kind of income.  But for most people that choose to do so, it’s much more.  It can become a part of who you are and therefore it can become a legacy you leave behind – be it large or small.
  4. You Want More: Whether it’s more money, better health care, more time, more freedom or a host of other things – a job can and does hold people back.  If you want to earn more money at a job, you can only ask for a raise, or try and get promoted, if you have the education and skills to do so.  In self-employment you are generally also working on self-development and therefore you continue to reach for bigger and better and continue to improve your life and your circumstances – along with your bank account.
  5. It’s All About Choices: Whether it’s about what time you start work, leave work, how much you make or what you do each day, self-employment can provide you with so many choices!

The last reason why you should become self-employed has always been my number one reason.  There was a couple of times that things were not going so well in the world of self-employment and I caved and applied for some jobs outside the house and even took one…it didn’t last.  I don’t like strict schedules, I don’t like having to sit and do nothing at the end of a day when all the work is caught up and we are just waiting for 5pm to roll around….I don’t like not having choices about how much I make or what I am going to do to earn that money.

Today I wake up whenever I wake up.  I take actions that I know will result in money and I enjoy those actions.  I am learning every day and becoming better in a host of ways that enrich not only my bank account, but my life.  It’s been an amazing ride these past 9 years and I could never, never go back to depending on a job.

Is self-employment for you?  Only you can make that decision.

Network Marketing is Not…

It’s not a Pyramid Scheme

Pyramid-Scheme1Network marketing still has a bad reputation in the eyes of some folks because of the days of the “pyramid scheme”.  Network marketing is not a pyramid scheme.   In fact, network marketing is often disguised as your favorite direct sales company.  Did you know that Mary Kay is a network marketing company, as well as a direct sales company?  So is Avon, Pampered Chef, 31 and just about any other direct sales company you can think of.  All that this means is that to make money you sell products, but to make LOTS of money and a “residual income” you need to have distributors under you, who also sell products.

It’s Not an “Only the Top Dog Gets the Money” Business

Network marketing is also not a “only the top people make money”top dog type of business model.  In the network marketing company I’m in personally I have people that have joined my business, but that are making more than I am and are in a rank above me.  That’s a good thing!  They are still helping me make a residual income and they can do it at a pace that works for them.  I’m not holding them back and they are able to take it as high as they want to.  I’m extremely happy for them!

It’s Not a “Get Rich Quick” or Lazy Man’s Business

getrichNetwork marketing is definitely NOT a “get rich quick” business model, nor is it a “sit back and do nothing and get paid” business.  Network marketing is indeed work, just as owning any business would be.   You can make a good income over time (not over night)

Do Your Homework

Before joining any network marketing company, do your homework.  Where do they stand with the business community.  Check them out in publications like Inc. Magazine, Success From Home Magazine, The Direct Sales Association and the Better Business Bureau.  Balance out your findings.  There will be bad reviews about every company out there, but you have to sort through the good and the bad and determine if they are a company that you want to work with.

Ask the Pros

The Network Marketing Pro, Eric Worre, recently wrote a book, “Go Pro” where Eric talks about the direction of the economy and the workplace today.  We see machines and computers continue to take our jobs – even retail and service jobs.  Other jobs have gone overseas for good.  Most jobs that are left require a college education…which of course requires a lot of money.  So how will those of us survive that don’t have great skills or an education as the jobs we do know how to do disappear?  Network marketing is an answer for some and it’s an ever growing trend.

From Yale to Jail – anyone can do network marketing.  I’ve told you what network marketing is not, now let me tell you what it is – or could be for you.  It can be a way to make a full-time income with part-time effort.  It can be a way for you to accomplish  your dreams and help your family accomplish theirs.  Go for your dreams!
